Joy to the World – Humanist Version

I recently decided to compose a Humanist version of the famous Christian song “Joy to the World”.

There have been numerous attempts to write lyrics to the song which reflect atheist principles, but as atheism is not a philosophy in itself and is by definition merely a negation of theist philosophy, atheist versions tend to be primarily negative and merely reactionary toward religion rather than celebrating something positive.

Here are a couple of atheist versions of the song that I’ve found, with the reactionary aspects in bold:

Joy to the world, the Lord is gone!
Forget your former king;
Let every mind expel him soon,
And science and reason sing,
And science and reason sing,
And science, and science, and reason sing.

Another verison:

Joy to the world, there is no god
A savior we don’t need
And all religion, is myth and superstition
Reality we face, reason we embrace
Such bumptious fatuity is a disgrace

Joy to the earth, where nature reigns,
Science we employ
God and creation, provide no explanation
Facts won’t be denied, from truth you cannot hide
Logic and evidence are on our side.

No more let ignorance pervade
Nor faith infest our world
Their pious masquerading, is utterly degrading
The holy ghost we mock, the Pope we will defrock
Christ Jesus and company are poppycock

Using aspects from those versions I have composed a humanist version that promotes what I feel are the core moral values of my brand of secular humanism: the freedom and well-being of humans and all sentient living things by extension, respect for nature, equality for both sexes, all genders, abilities and ethnic groups, naturalism, empiricism and the scientific method. I feel it reflects more accurately what I do believe, rather that what I don’t.

Joy to the world, let knowledge reign!
Let us our minds employ;
When evidence we face, reason we embrace
And science and logic sing,
And science and logic sing,
And science, and science and logic sing.

Joy to the earth, where nature reigns
Respect for living things,
We cherish every bud, and try to shed no blood
Hold earth in high esteem
Hold earth in high esteem
Hold earth, hold earth in high esteem

Joy to mankind, and womankind!
All ethnic groups unite
Liberty we prize, all equal in our eyes,
The human race is one
The human race is one,
The human, the human race is one.

  1. I rewrote this Christmas hymn, sung to the tune of Hark the Herald Angels Sing:

Hark the Herald New Born Day
Rise and case sad thoughts away
Peace on earth and mercy mild
    Don’t get mad, get reconcled
    Joyful all ye peoples rise
End all war and strife and lies
    All sides win when
    No
    One
    Dies
Let’s make this world our paradise.
